ALO Society celebrated World Leprosy Day 2026 across 9 districts—Dhaka, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Nilphamari, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban—in collaboration with 21 federations and jointly with The Leprosy Mission Bangladesh. The programs included rallies, discussion meetings, courtyard meetings, and community awareness activities to promote the message that leprosy is curable and that social stigma remains the real barrier. Government officials, health department representatives, tea company managers and staff, federation leaders, and community members actively participated in the events. A total of 535 participants attended, including 280 males and 255 females. As part of the Emergency Support Education for Empowerment (1st Phase, 2nd Year) project, supported by the Sasakawa Health Foundation, ALO Society distributed blankets to students and federation leaders to strengthen educational opportunities and empower persons affected by leprosy and their families.

Bali, Indonesia – July 4-9, 2025

Three representatives from ALO Society—Mr. Klinton Malakar, Mr. Solaiman Ali, and Mr. Shusanta Chakma—participated in the 3rd Global Forum of People’s Organizations on Hansen’s Disease, held in Bali, Indonesia, from July 3 to July 6, 2025. Organized by the Sasakawa Leprosy (Hansen’s Disease) Initiative, the forum brought together over 110 representatives from 21 countries to address the key challenges faced by persons affected by leprosy.

From ALO Society, both an experienced leader and a young leader affected by leprosy joined the forum. Their participation enabled them to gain a deeper understanding of the global context surrounding leprosy and to learn from the experiences and strategies being implemented worldwide. The forum focused on promoting human rights, combating stigma, and strengthening the voices of those directly impacted by Hansen’s disease. It embraced a people-centered approach, with the design and facilitation of the sessions led by individuals who have personal experience with the disease.

One of the major outcomes of the forum was the development of a Letter of Commitment and a set of Recommendations to Stakeholders, calling for urgent and collective action to protect the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons affected by Hansen’s disease.

During the forum, the ALO team presented a Needs Assessment Report, highlighting the critical challenges faced by individuals affected by leprosy in Bangladesh—particularly in the areas of mental health and human rights violations. Their contributions offered valuable insight into the unique struggles of the leprosy-affected community in South Asia and helped broaden the global understanding of regional disparities.

Following the forum, ALO Society also took part in the 22nd International Leprosy Congress (ILC), a globally recognized scientific conference dedicated to advancing leprosy research, treatment, and policy. Held at the same location, the ILC was centered around the theme: “Towards a World with Zero Leprosy.”

At the ILC, ALO presented an e-poster on Digital Leprosy Complication Care, showcasing its innovative approach to integrating technology in the treatment and management of leprosy-related complications in low-resource settings.

These two international events provided a significant opportunity for ALO Society to represent the voices of the leprosy-affected community in Bangladesh on a global platform. Through their active engagement, ALO continued to advocate for inclusive healthcare, mental health support, and the protection of human rights, reaffirming its commitment to building a just and equitable future for all persons affected by Hansen’s disease..

The guests arrived at noon and were warmly received by ALO Society members. After friendly introductions and light conversations, everyone joined together for lunch, creating a comfortable atmosphere that encouraged meaningful interactions throughout the day.

Following lunch, mentors from the Young Scholar Program presented their action plans. The session became lively and engaging as the donors asked insightful questions, which the scholars and mentors answered with confidence and clarity. Their responses and dedication were highly appreciated by the guests, who commended the young participants for their vision and commitment.

The visit continued with a discussion with federation leaders, focusing on their ongoing challenges, organizational needs, and potential solutions for strengthening the federations. This thoughtful conversation opened the door to new ideas and collaborative approaches for better community impact.

A short interaction with students followed, giving them a chance to share their personal experiences and what they have learned through ALO’s initiatives. Their enthusiasm and sincerity added a refreshing and inspiring touch to the day.

After a tea break, an open discussion took place where all participants had the chance to interact freely with the guests. The conversation flowed naturally with questions, ideas, and reflections shared across the room, creating an inclusive and engaging environment.

An encouraging moment followed when scholars were awarded certificates, provided with support from the Sasakawa Health Foundation. This gesture was warmly appreciated by the young participants, motivating them to pursue their work with even greater confidence and dedication.

The visit of Dr. Takahiro Nanri and Ms. Chieko Takahashi was truly inspiring for everyone involved. It not only strengthened the relationship between the Sasakawa Foundation and ALO Society but also encouraged deeper reflection on the work being done, the progress achieved, and the collective vision for a more inclusive future. The day ended on a positive and heartfelt note, reminding everyone of the importance of partnership, dialogue, and shared purpose.

The students shared that they had gained skills in teaching and learned about identifying leprosy cases. They also mentioned that the coaching support they provided was very helpful for learners. Since the coaching was free, many parents willingly sent their children to attend.

During the discussion, students shared some challenges they faced, mainly the lack of space for coaching in city areas. Many of them found it difficult to conduct sessions at home due to limited space.

The full-day workshop included group activities and discussions on how to continue supporting students even after the project ends. The participants explored ways to use the resources provided by ALO to continue teaching and helping their communities in the future.

The theme for this year’s observance was “Unite. Act. Eliminate.” A total of 56 participants across the three locations joined rallies and discussion meetings designed to educate and inspire action.

In Dhaka, participants took part in a rally and a discussion meeting. A notable moment was the heartfelt sharing of a personal journey by an ALO participant, who recounted their life story and challenges faced due to leprosy. This testimony was a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of those affected by the disease.
Moulvibazar

Venue: Kakiachara Federation
Participants: 25 (Male: 3, Female: 22)
In Moulvibazar, members of the Kakiachara Federation and government health staff participated in the program. The discussions emphasized the need for stronger healthcare systems and community support to combat leprosy and empower those impacted.

Understanding Disability Day: History and Observations

Disability Day, officially known as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), is observed every year on December 3rd. This significant day is dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities while raising awareness about the societal benefits of inclusion and accessibility.

The History of Disability Day

The roots of Disability Day trace back to 1981, when the United Nations declared it the International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP). The workshop was inaugurated by Md. Kamal Uddin, the Chairman of ALO Society, and Mr. Jiptha Boiragee, the Program Support Coordinator of The Leprosy Mission International Bangladesh. The workshop was attended by 22 participants, among whom 17 were community resource persons

The purpose of this workshop was to provide leprosy complications care services to people suffering from leprosy complications using digital media, especially to those who live far away from the hospital due to geographical conditions and are unable to go to the hospital.

Mr. Kundan Acharya, Physiotherapist of The Leprosy Mission Nepal, provided effective training on the prevention of leprosy disability.

Upon completion of the training, every Community Resource Person was provided with a smart mobile phone for the project. On the second day of the training program, Project Officers of the ALO Society provided training on digital reporting and video calling, during which manual training was given on how to report using ALO Society’s reporting app. On this day, safeguarding was discussed by Program Support Co-Ordinator Mr. Jiptha Boiragee, who emphasized the importance of following this policy.

At the end of the second-day workshop, Mr. Jiptha Boiragee, and Mr. Noyel Tappa of The Leprosy Mission International-Bangladesh distributed a check to each federation. The workshop was attended by Mrs. Masuma Parveen, Manager of The Leprosy Mission International-Bangladesh, Documentation Manager Mr. Alex Frank Raulim, Project Officer Mr. Sujit Moulik, and Md. Musfiq Rahman.

As always, this year too, on 11th March 2022, IDEA Nepal in coordination with Nepal Leprosy Network, and Southwestern State College organized a great event of celebration of the 25th International Day of Dignity and Respect in the glorious presence of the Honorable Member of Parliament of Nepal, Badri Pandey.

 Prabhu Bank Ltd was the main sponsor while KIF Musickotha (local church) was the co-sponsor of the event. The program was observed by government officials, representatives from the Leprosy networks, representatives from WHO (Dr. Khim Pa Pa), international delegates (Mr. Ramavarai Sah, Joint-secretary, APAL India) and (Mr. Rev Thuraisamy Sivagnanam Joshua) journalists, teachers and students, people who have experienced Hansen’s disease and their family members, relatives, and neighbors.

During the program, six individuals were honored for their remarkable contributions in the field of leprosy. Three persons are people with lived experience who have remarkable contributions and are exemplary in advocating, spreading awareness, and fostering leadership, while the other three are the individuals who have significant contributions in bringing smiles to the faces of those who have experienced Hansen’s disease. Following were the individuals honored during the event:

The Chief Guest, Honorable Member of Parliament of Nepal, Badri Pandey, stated that none should be discriminated against for their medical conditions. He further stated that he is committed to amplifying the people’s voices to abolish the discriminatory laws in Nepal.

On Sunday morning at 8.30 AM, the rally came out in front of the 250-bed General hospital and a discussion meeting was held after the standing rally. The program was organized by the Christian Service Society (CSS) and the Leprosy Mission International-Bangladesh at the Civil Surgeon’s office premises.

Some of the winners of the essay competition on leprosy eradication by 2030 were awarded at the event.
The program was conducted by Director of Health and Education, Khulna, Md. Abul Kalam Azad. Chief guest Dr. Rashed said, `We have eight more years, we need to come together and start working hard now”.

Other speakers also spoke on the occasion. The speakers said that leprosy patients were not called before. They were kept apart. But leprosy can be cured by treatment. All leprosy patients are well treated. With everyone’s cooperation, the country will be declared leprosy free by 2030.

The event was attended by Klinton Malakar, Project Officer, ALO Society on Behalf of Leprosy mission-International-Bangladesh and representatives of various NGOs including journalists and others were present.

A discussion meeting was held after the standing rally organized by Panchagarh District Leprosy and Disability at Panchagarh Civil Surgeon Office premises at 9 am on Sunday. 

The discussion meeting was attended by various government and private officials, NGO representatives and people affected by leprosy.

Speakers said, earlier leprosy patients were not called. They were kept apart.

But leprosy is cured by treatment. All leprosy patients are well treated. With everyone's cooperation, the country will be declared leprosy free by 2030.


Honorable Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Sadar, Panchagarh Md. Masudul Haque assured all kinds of cooperation to the leprosy patients from his Upazila will be provided.

Later the campaign was carried out in Rajnagard Khalpara area of ​​the upazila and two leprosy suspected  were found there.
